A Review of Reviews or first impression?
Before we get too far into this post I want to explain how it will be structured, like a review basically.
Part 1: How I Review
Part 2: The Nature of Reviews
Part 3: Other ramblings
Part 1:
-Talk about the actual product, not what I think the product will be like.
-Talk about the quirks of the product, elements that stick out or seem quirky.
-Try to describe the actual experience the product provides.
-Communicate any potential emotions and rationale.
-Highlight my own perceived bias and create a point of reference so you can judge for yourself.
Part 2:
Opinions are more readily available then ever before. While opinions hold value, some are more useful depending on the situation, perspective and context in which they are presented. Reviews in theory should be an objective representation of the actual item, so that a consumer can decide, "yes I want this product or no."
However, Bias exists literally everywhere. From which products gets showcased, to who completes the review. Do you get an expert who likes and knows the product? Their bias drifts away from the interests of the average consumer and can seem trivial to them? Do you get someone unfamiliar with the product? Well in that situation, they lack detailed insight into the inner workings of the product/industry.
Both reviewers provide equal value when assessing a product and can bring truly unique viewpoints. The only element that changes is the consumer and ultimately what they are looking for in the product.
I believe that it's the reviewer's goal to present as much of the product and let the consumer decide ultimately.
Part 3:
So what about first impressions, previews and sponsor copies? Often I see first impressions labelled as reviews and vice versa. Going back to my previous statement, a review should provide as much detail about a product as possible, but this is not a universal mindset. At the end of the day, it comes down to the consumer's willingness to seek out information, and the stopping point will vary. As for paid previews and sponsor copies, this information should always be highlighted and made visible. The more light given to personal bias the better, since it let's you know how to interpret the review and the perspective of the reviewer.
In conclusion:
I look forward to exploring products I am interested in and sharing them with you. The goal of this blog is to talk about my hobby and purchasing new products is a natural extension of that. If I find a product I like or have thoughts on, I want to share it.
If you were to review, how would you do it? Let me know on twitter @ATT64.
Cheers
